The Rowdy World of Rap's New Underground

The lo-fi rap that thrives on SoundCloud teems with unruly energy. Can it survive the mainstream ?

SEATTLE — One night this spring, the rapper Lil Pump, 16, with braces on his teeth, was asleep — or something like it — on the couch in the upstairs green room at the Columbia City Theater here, his blond and pink dreads dangling in front of his face and a pair of Gucci high-tops slung around his neck.

In walked his longtime friend and fellow rapper Smokepurpp, 20, in a loosefitting plaid shirt over a Nirvana T-shirt, wondering, “Who got Xanax and Percocet ?”

In the high-ceilinged, brick-walled main room, around 300 fans were bouncing off one another, waiting for the show to begin. They were young — the bar was effectively closed, and a woman was selling cans of Sunkist and Minute Maid Lemonade from an ice-filled tub.

Eventually Lil Pump roused himself and sneaked out the back door. When he finally made it to the stage — joining Smokepurpp, who had been scheduled to go on after him — he was received full-throatedly, rowdily, sweatily. Perhaps a little too much so : Someone in the crowd said something Lil Pump didn't take kindly to, and he replied with a kick to a young man's head. Soon, the front of the room was a royal rumble, sending combatants from the stage to the floor, and some on the floor running for the doors.

It was just another unpredictable, bruising night in the world of SoundCloud rap — a swelling subgenre that takes its name from its creators' preferred streaming service — which in the last year has become the most vital and disruptive new movement in hip-hop thanks to rebellious music, volcanic energy and occasional acts of malevolence.

Its stars are internet celebrities, fashioning themselves into outlandish characters in the anime that is modern hip-hop : the theatrical Florida tag team Smokepurpp and Lil Pump (who perform solo, and also together as Gucci Gang) ; the anguished heartthrob Lil Peep ; the problematic outlaw XXXTentacion. The aesthetic is high-end streetwear meets high fashion, with face tattoos, hair dyed in wild colors and a prescription-drug ooze. The music is low-fidelity and insistent, throbbing with distorted bass, like trap music reduced over a hot fire to its rawest component parts.

At its best, it has an almost punklike purity, emphasizing abandon over structure, rawness over dexterity. “It sounds so unpolished, so youthful,” said Roger Gengo, whose website Masked Gorilla has cataloged this scene since its infancy. He likened the aesthetic to “all the punk and grunge bands I grew up on. I get why people call it SoundCloud rap, but I call it grunge rap.”

It is, in some ways, a logical retort to the smoothness of Drake-era major-label rap, which has long ceded most of its sharp elbows and street bluster. (Indeed, XXXTentacion has made Drake a target of his social-media diatribes.) It is also something of a natural sound for the streaming era, which rewards gut-level accessibility and sonic consistency.

These artists — and hundreds more like them — have gathered primarily on SoundCloud, the streaming service most oriented toward music discovery, and the one with the lowest barrier to entry. That has meant a new ecosystem of rising stars, who ascend quicker than ever — releasing songs that get millions of listens, booking nationwide tours, selling merchandise — without traditional gatekeepers.

Not all hip-hop counter-movements seep into the genre's mainstream, but SoundCloud rap is growing fast, and major labels are hovering. A few rappers — Lil Pump, Smokepurpp and Wifisfuneral among them — have recently signed deals. And the scene has a breakout hit, “Look at Me,” by XXXTentacion, which recently climbed from SoundCloud ubiquity to No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is in rotation on hip-hop radio.

The open question is how much of this renegade energy — from the songs, which have more in common with hardcore than hip-hop, to the fistfights, to the drugs — will survive during the bumpy transition into the mainstream.

The song Smokepurpp was set to perform just before the show-ending rumble is called “Ski Mask,” and its video encapsulates everything that is so titillating about this scene. It's a surrealist soft-focus street adventure taking cues from low-budget science-fiction films and first-person-shooter video games. At one point, Lil Pump stomps across the screen, machine gun aimed into his own mouth — an extreme image to go along with extreme music.

“When people laugh at us, we laugh with them ; we know it's funny,” Smokepurpp said before the Seattle show. “We did this so you guys can react like that.”

Smokepurpp's tour with Lil Pump was organized by No Jumper, which in the last couple of years has become The Paris Review of the face-tattoo set, its long-form video interviews considered a first step toward credibility for oodles of SoundCloud-rap would-bes. Adam22, a lanky, heavily tattooed BMX biker who is No Jumper's owner and chief interviewer, played den father on the tour.

“It's so far beyond what any thinking person could consider to be 100 percent real,” he said of the theatrical imagery deployed by Smokepurpp and Lil Pump, who are, he said, “so aware of what makes a song popular or what makes a tweet go viral that they have completely redefined the idea of what it is to be a rapper.”

This penchant for meme-first exaggeration — inflating characters until they become larger than life — is a hallmark of the scene. “When I first met all these kids, these kids looked 10 percent punk,” said Jimmy Duval, one of the scene's key producers. “As the sound got bigger, their image got bigger with the sound.”

That reckless energy is often transferred into the crowds, which skew young, male and white, and frequently feature mosh pits. “You go to a show, and it's a punk rock show,” said Tariq Cherif, one of the founders of Miami's Rolling Loud Festival, which booked several of these artists to play in May. “They wanna rage, they wanna sweat, they wanna scream.”

But sometimes, as at the Seattle show, the extreme behavior spills into the real world. Ski Mask the Slump God was attacked onstage while performing in Los Angeles. On social media, Lil Pump bragged about crashing a new Porsche and, after reaching one million followers on Instagram, celebrated with a Xanax-shaped cake. The current XXXTentacion tour has been riddled with problems : One night, he was attacked onstage by a rival ; another, he punched a fan ; at another, Wifisfuneral stage dove only to find himself on the receiving end of a beat down, landing him in the hospital.

XXXTentacion was arrested twice in 2016, including on a charge of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. While he was in jail — he was released in March — “Look at Me” became the scene's breakout hit, making him the movement's troubled and troubling poster child.

His public behavior since his release has toggled between earnest interactions with gobsmacked fans captured on social media — something many SoundCloud artists excel at, communicating directly to their audience in their language — and less savory choices, like tweeting the apparent home address of a rival, or saying impolite things about Drake's mother in retribution for Drake seeming to have borrowed his “Look at Me” rhyme patterns on a recent song.

Before he went to jail, he was on the same popularity level as many of his generational peers, but now, seemingly in large part because of his outlaw reputation, his fame is growing the fastest. On his current tour, while a potential criminal trial looms for the aggravated battery charge, he is performing to more than 1,000 people a night ; online, T-shirts, skateboard decks and iPhone cases with his mug shot abound. In one example of cross-promotion, XXXTentacion was handed the keys to SoundCloud's Snapchat during Rolling Loud, but a representative for the streaming service declined to further detail how the company had directly worked with these artists. (XXXTentacion's representatives declined to make him available for an interview.)

Though these rappers operate on the fringes of the hip-hop mainstream, they are not without antecedent. They are the bad-boy junior league of the genre's emerging psychedelic era, inheritors of experimentalists like Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug and the internet-rap hero Chief Keef. And in some ways, this is a regional scene passing for an internet phenomenon : Most of the crucial artists and producers hail from the Miami area. The sound's aesthetic lineage is traceable through several of that city's micromovement stars over the last few years — Spaceghostpurrp and the Raider Klan, Denzel Curry, Yung Simmie, Fat Nick and Pouya.

It's a sound attributable to a handful of rappers, but an even smaller number of producers. “Everything is literally made with me not even getting out of my bed and a kid coming and getting on the mike and screaming or rapping,” said Ronny J, producer of Smokepurpp's “Audi,” among others (and who recently signed with Atlantic Records as an artist). Mr. Duval made the original beat for “Look at Me” almost two years ago for a different rapper. “No one had ever pushed it that far — that was very extreme,” Mr. Duval said of the song's distortion. “Now these kids are all coming to me, and they're all like, ‘I need that sound.'”

Whether a sound this jagged can survive in the less forgiving waters of the rap radio mainstream remains to be seen. “Even though it's big, it's still an outlier sound,” Mr. Duval said. “No drastic sound like this can last.”

The rappers, too, are finding that a little streamlining goes a long way. As Smokepurpp's online hobby has become a potential career — he recently signed with Alamo Records, an imprint of Interscope, which also signed Wifisfuneral — he has had to shift his priorities. “Back in the day, it was probably more 85-15,” he said, describing how he split his attention between image and music. “As of now, it's more like 60 percent music, 40 percent image.”

Drugs, he said, had a purpose : “I do Xannies cause they actually relax me,” he said, referring to Xanax. “People think I just do it for fun.”

A few weeks later, he was in Alamo's New York office, looking more lucid. The label's founder, Todd Moscowitz, said he had given Smokepurpp some advice, reminding him that if he wanted to elevate to the next level of success, he would need to rely on drugs less.

As part of his plan to shift Smokepurpp closer to the mainstream, Mr. Moscowitz moved him into a New York apartment and put a team — graphic designers, merchandise experts and blogger — to work. Mid-interview, Mr. Moscowitz called a representative of Chief Keef to offer $10,000 for a verse on Smokepurpp's coming mixtape. Out in the office, Smokepurpp looked over artwork for a new single in which he recreated the funeral coffin photograph of the shock-punker G. G. Allin, who died of an apparent drug overdose in 1993.

With increasingly outlandish reference points, and thanks to the direct fan contact afforded by the internet, this scene is evolving rapidly. It has room for woozily melodic rappers like UnoTheActivist ; rock-influenced sing-rappers like Trippie Redd ; and even Matt Ox, a white preteen rapper from Philadelphia whose breakthrough video, “Overwhelming,” was full of fidget spinners.

“Each year — each half a year — barriers are stripped away from hip-hop,” Mr. Gengo said.

That's clearest in the rise of Lil Peep, who over the last 24 months has evolved into something like the scene's Kurt Cobain, with several astonishingly gloomy and diabolically melodic releases, and a body that is in constant flux : hair dyed one color after another, an anarchy sign and the word “crybaby” tattooed on his face.

“When I talk about understanding the meme,” Adam22 said, “he gets it.”

Lil Peep, who is white, started as a more straightforward rapper, but his recent releases, particularly the excellent “Hellboy,” have skewed more toward modern, forward-sounding emo.

“I'm not a SoundCloud rapper anymore — I'm off of that,” he said in New York in April, before playing a transfixing set in Webster Hall's Marlin Room, on a stage that included the sagging bed from his Los Angeles apartment, the one on which he's made much of his music. His songs find a middle ground between hip-hop bluster and emo's bulked-up anxiety, a blend that feels eminently of the moment, and inevitable.

Just before the beginning of the interview, he'd pulled a Xanax out of a prescription bottle with the name scratched off and taken it. A half-hour later, he was in slow-motion, insisting, “I go as hard as I can when I'm anxiety-free.”

Dans le rap, tout va toujours trop vite. Sous-côté à l'aube, sur-côté dès midi. Les deux frères de Rae Sremmurd sont nés en 1991 et en 1993 — ils sont déjà des vétérans. Il n'y a pas d'âge pour ripper des type beats, installer l'autotune et trouver un pote pour filmer une vidéo à uploader sur YouTube. Ce n'est donc pas surprenant de retrouver autant de rappeurs mineurs, des moins de 21 ans, des moins de 18 ans, des moins de 16 ans.

Dernière sensation en date, le très jeune Matt Ox de Philadelphie qui fait du bruit en ligne avec son dernier clip Overwhelming où il surfe sur la vague des fidget spinners avec allégresse. Il n'y a pas que lui, Kylian Mbappé ou Emmanuel Macron qui attirent les yeux du reste du monde intrigués par leur jeunesse : Lil Pump de Miami est né en août 2000, les stars de YouTube du Michigan Ayo & Teo sont nés en 1996 et 1997, le chicagoan Lil Mouse en 1999.

S'ils collaborent depuis un moment, Hoodrich Pablo Juan et le producteur Danny Wolf viennent tout juste de sortir leur premier projet commun avec la mixtape HoodWolf. En onze tracks, les deux membres de l'écurie Hoodrich nous prouvent qu'ils sont immanquables dans la scène d'Atlanta.

On entend souvent Hoodrich Pablo Juan se vanter que son plug est Colombien. Pourtant sur HoodWolf son plug est Mexicain. A 20 ans, Danny Wolf roule déjà avec la team Hoodrich. Il faut dire que le jeune homme s'en est donné les moyens. Arrivé illégalement à Atlanta à l'âge de 10 ans, sa mère lui demande rapidement de mettre à l'écrit des façons de se faire de l'argent et le force à jouer de plusieurs instruments. S'il se fait ses premiers sous en revendant des chaînes en or, Danny est un vrai couteau suisse : vidéos, artworks, productions, c'est le pack qu'il propose aux artistes qu'il rencontre. C'est d'ailleurs pour réaliser des clips qu'il est tout d'abord recruté par la team Hoodrich, qui, pour rappel, comprend notamment DJ Scream, Dj Spinz, DJ Swamp Izzo ou encore DJ Lil Keem. Et c'est donc en filmant les rappeurs d'Atlanta qu'il va se constituer un carnet d'adresse. Aujourd'hui il est connu pour son travail avec ILoveMakonnen, Ugly God, Rich The Kid, 6dogs, Lil Pump, et bien sûr Hoodrich Pablo Juan avec qui il collabore depuis le premier volet de Designer Drugz.

Si vous pouvez en apprendre plus sur Danny Wolf avec son interview pour No Jumper ou chez XXL, on ne présente plus Hoodrich Pablo Juan. Que ce soit avec Spiffy Global ou Brodinski, l'ex-dealer de tes rappeurs préférés et son flow effortless ne s'arrêtent pas de faire des étincelles. Et HoodWolf représente clairement l'incendie.

Sur cette mixtape, Danny Wolf est armé d'une machette à chaque main et n'hésite pas à asséner des coups. A l'image de la première piste Zabamambafoo, missile téléguidé par le légendaire DJ Spinz, qui à côté d'une légère mélodie parfaitement dosée, nous balance des basses en pleine face. Il en est de même avec Trapstar Rockstar, où le rappeur nous explique qu'il tient son arme comme une guitare, et ses effets sonores bruts. Pourtant Danny Wolf semble parfaitement maîtriser sa formule et ce n'est pas pour déplaire à Hoodrich Pablo Juan qui surfe sans effort sur les vagues de son producteur (sans faire de mauvais jeu de mot avec la track Pool Party). Si ce dernier est souvent aidé par d'autres producteurs, il produit néanmoins 4 tracks seul, et pas des moindres. Hoodrich Pablo Juan est lui aussi accompagné de ses shooters : Drugrixh Peso, Drugrixh Hect et Lil Dude ont chacun deux featurings sur la mixtape et remplissent parfaitement leur rôle, sans bavure. Comme sur le minimaliste posse cut MONYPWRSPT où les quatre compères démontrent, encore une fois et chacun dans un style différent, leur facilité à plier une production du jeune Danny.

Avec ses 11 tracks et ses 32 minutes, le projet est court mais efficace et arrive à éclairer d'une nouvelle lumière les flows d'Hoodrich Pablo Juan qui commençaient à devenir quelque peu lassants. Terriblement addictif, chaque refrain rentre dans la tête pour nous posséder et je crois que le démon de la pochette y est pour beaucoup. Un must have de 2017 qui réunit deux des plus talentueux et productifs artistes d'Atlanta.

– Blvc Svnd – My Head 24.7 (Prod. by BLVCSVNDXSHARK)
Blvc Svnd ou la preuve qu'on n'est jamais mieux servi que par soi-même. Son nouveau projet, Blvc's World, est presque entièrement auto-produit, et ce titre illustre bien les prouesses musicales qui peuvent résulter d'un telle entreprise.
A l'instar de Motörhead et son speed metal (RIP Lemmy) Blvc Svnd semble mettre en place une speed-trap où kicks brutaux répondent à des snares qui ricochent à tout allure. Sur My Head 24.7 le minimalisme de la présence vocale de Blvc (qui se résument à quelques phrases répétées frénétiquement) renforce ce coté radical, expérimental et frontalement violent qui fait bouger la tête à s'en décoller les cervicales.

– Butter Bullets – Alexander Shulgin
Avec ce titre tiré de la première compilation du collectif Casual Gabberz, Butter Bullets réussit avec brio le difficile exercice de fusionner techno hardcore et rap, et confirme son statut de précurseur lorsque s'agit de défricher les tendances de demain, sans jamais perdre en identité. Parfaitement dans la thématique du projet avec son kick à 150 BPM et son synthé crépitant, on retrouve habilement les mélodies classiques au piano et le flow arrogant indissociables du travail du duo. Alors que le reste de l'album se charge de vous au canon-scié, Alexander Shulgin se vit davantage comme un coup de douk-douk dans le flan, vous laissant agonisant dans le caniveau. Inutile de fuir.

– Chief Keef – Kills (Prod. by D.Rich)
N'en déplaise à ceux qui décrivent sa carrière comme une longue chute depuis son éclosion en 2011, 2017 sonne le retour du natif de Chiraq sur le devant de la scène. Après une mixtape toujours plus expérimentale en début d'année (qui ne touche cependant qu'un certain public de fanatiques) et quelques featurings intéressants (notamment avec Tyga ou KSupreme), Turbo vient de sortir son nouveau single Kills). Sur une production du producteur fétiche du regretté Bankroll Fresh, D.Rich, le boss du GloGang démontre encore une fois qu'il a la recette que toute la nouvelle génération de soundcloud rappers essaie de concocter. Un rap simpliste, efficace, absurde et hypnotisant. Semblant en forme et à l'aise, Sosa switch son flow avec aisance et parle de fumer des twinkies pendant que les pianos diaboliques de D.Rich électrisent la track.

– Fortune - Oh Hi Hater (Hiatus) (Prod. By Mike Will Made It)
Son premier projet, The Warm up, pourtant hosted par Future, n'avait rien de flamboyant. Fils d'un ancien manager de l'Astronaute, il boucla la boucle en signant chez Freebandz. Mais sa trap générique pouvait laisser de marbre. Jusqu'à l'extrêmement surprenante prestation que Fortune a fourni sur Ransom 2. Dans Oh Hi Hater (Hiatus), le garçon de Saint-Louis offre un morceau plein de malice, ponctué d'étonnants gargarismes sur la guitare sèche fournie par Mike Will, qui ne fait pas tâche entre Gucci On My et Perfect Pint, soit deux des principaux hits de l'album. Voilà nos certitudes sur Fortune balayées, en attendant la suite.

– Gucci Mane ft. Rocko - Pardon Me (Prod. by 808 Mafia)
Rocko n'avait pas été epargné par Gucci lors de son fameux pétage de plomb sur Twitter en 2013. Guwop s'était, à l'époque, bien payé sa poire, mais comme le pardon est divin (et accessoirement le buzz du coté de Gucci davantage que du coté de Rocko), l'ancien boss de Future a pardonné Radric. Cette réconciliation aurait pu donner naissance à un featuring un peu forcé et pas forcément utile, pourtant, (comme quoi il ne faut jamais juger trop vite) avec le bien nommé Pardon Me on tient une bien belle collaboration. Mélodie originale, sombre et entêtante, un Guwop très en forme ("Put a hole on a Ni**a and tell him to "hold that"") qui dézingue ses deux couplets à coup de punchlines plus absurdes les unes que les autres et un refrain surprenant de justesse où le calme de Rocko vient apaiser et contrebalancer la fougue de Wizop.

– Hoodrich Pablo Juan ft. Drugrixh Peso - On The Road (Prod. by Spiffy Global)
L'alchimie entre le magnétique Hoodrich Pablo Juan et le producteur Spiffy Global s'est matérialisée grâce à la mixtape Master Sensei. Un duo mortel à suivre attentivement.

Après la sortie récente de son album Tombstone 3, Iceberg Black est déjà de retour pour terroriser SoundCloud et le hip-hop souterrain avec Frost Bite. Une fois n'est pas coutume, le rappeur new-yorkais a délégué l'instrumentale à FYM et au producteur frinçais La Crise. En espérant que ce soit le début d'une longue association tant la collaboration est soignée.

– Kodak Black - Tunnel Vision (Prod. by Metro Boomin & Southside)
Kodak Black en mode crooner sur une prod de Metro Boomin et Southside, sur le papier ça sonne déjà comme du miel, mais si on ajoute au mélange la touche de flûte en vogue, on tient certainement de quoi se frotter sous les draps toute l'année. Et comme on avait pu le subodorer, l'arrivée de Lil Trump à la maison blanche a donné des sujets de vidéo en pagaille à nos rappeurs. Ici notre rappeur aux dents jaunes chante Tunnel Vision devant des membres du Ku Klux Klan pendus à des croix en flamme, sur fond de lutte à mains nues entre un redneck blanc et un pécore noir.

– K$upreme - Frienemies (Prod. by Isobeats)
Le bras droit maléfique de Lil Yachty a sorti sa mixtape Flex Music cette semaine. Outre un super titre avec son père spirituel (Uzi avec Chief Keef), on peut retenir de la musique du pirate de la sailing team qu'elle est tant expérimentale que régressive. Sur Frienemies, il chantonne ses déroutes amicales avec le flow décalé et enfantin qu'on lui connait pendant que l'instrumentale déborde de pianos, flûtes et autres orgues. Les non anglophones auraient presque l'impression d'écouter une générique de dessin animé mais non c'est bien Ksupreme qui parle de frime et de trahison.

– Lil Pump - Flex Like Ouu (Prod. by Danny Wolf & Ronny J)
A 16 ans, l'auto-proclamé « trapper of the century » n'a que des bangers dans son cartable MCM. Aidé par une production épurée de Danny Wolf, Flex Like Ouu ne déroge pas à la règle. Terriblement efficace, Lil Pump maîtrise parfaitement les codes de cette trap édulcorée : il est difficile de ne pas appuyer sur replay une fois la maigre minute et quarante-neuf secondes écoulée.

– Mach-Hommy x The Alchemist - Brand Name
« They say my sh*t too hard school ». Et ceux qui semblent visiblement penser que Mach-Hommy fait partie de ces rappeurs allant droit au but n'ont pas foncièrement tort. Sur un beat poisseux produit par The Alchemist pour sa série de maxis vinyls Craft Singles, le rappeur de Newark et proche de l'écurie Griselda Records, signe le crasseux Brand Name, porté par son flow nonchalant et le mixage d'Eddie Sancho. Un avant-goût d'un futur EP 5'O Clock Shadow qui devrait suivre le très appréciable HBO (Haitain Body Odor) sorti il y a peu.

– Misogi - Paralyzed
Muet pendant de longs mois suite à la sortie de son album PLAYMISOGI®, Zain (de son vrai nom) nous gâte en partageant un titre censé figurer sur son prochain EP Death Metal. Le producteur, chanteur et guitariste frappe fort et rappelle au monde entier qu'il faudra compter sur lui pendant encore très longtemps. On ne pouvait pas rêver mieux.
Malheureusement, Paralyzed sera laissé sur le bord de la route pour d'obscures raisons. Cependant, nous ne bouderons pas notre plaisir.

– Nesta - I'm not cool
Ce track est directement inspiré de la philosophie de vie de Nesta : le positivisme à l'état pur. Une joie de vivre qu'on ressent tout le long du morceau où le chanteur semble s'exprimer le sourire aux lèvres. Produit par Nesta, c'est toute l'âme de la Floride que ce morceau tente de retranscrire. Interrogé par HNHH, le chanteur dit être tombé amoureux de la trap music en Floride où un véritable mélange des genres a opéré. Aujourd'hui l'artiste propose un RnB estival avec I'm Not Cool. Le morceau, on l'espère, ambiancera vos plus belles soirées d'été.

– OMB Peezy x OMB Iceberg x OMB Shawniebo - No Need
Le jeune rappeur de 20 ans s'est entouré de sa famille OMB pour son dernier morceau No Need, où la réalité de la rue et de ses codes est décrite sur un sample de voix planant et entêtant. OMB Peezy a grandi à Mobile (Alabama) mais a récemment déménagé à Sacramento (Californie) du fait de sa connexion avec la scène de la Bay Area. Ce lien se sent dans les choix de production ainsi que dans son gangsta rap venant du cœur et des tripes, pouvant évoquer des rappeurs tels que The Jacka ou J Stalin. Il vient d'ailleurs de signer sur Sick Wid It, le label de E-40, qui est très enthousiaste à propos du jeune homme. Il est donc fort probable qu'on entende encore parler de OMB Peezy à l'avenir.

– PoloGang Kentae ft. Nick Kane – Backstreet Baby (Prod. by ZiggyOnTheKeyboard & Drew Taylor)
Originaire de Toledo dans l'Ohio, PoloGang Kentae en est encore aux balbutiements de sa jeune carrière et peut pourtant cependant se targuer d'avoir depuis peu à son actif BackStreet Baby, une super ballade printanière et optimiste qui dépeint son quotidien de gars de la rue. Ici pas d'autotune ou d'autre artifice synthétique, mais une simplicité qui fait mouche instantanément. Aucun chichi, tant dans le flow que dans le grain de la voix ou la structure du morceau, Kentae ne semble pas en avoir besoin pour obtenir cette atmosphère ensoleillée et teintée d'une espèce de mélancolie juvénile.
Malgré un format ultra classique, l'énergie du petit et l'excellente production font de ce morceau un petit hit qui s'écoute tout seul en ridant sous les premiers rayons de soleil de l'année... Le "CrackBaby" a de belles choses devant lui.

– Que – Weed Bank (Prod. by Sonny Digital)
Depuis la remarquable mixtape Forbes Atlanta sortie en 2013, la paire Que/Sonny Digital forme sans conteste l'une des combinaisons rappeur/producteur les plus efficaces de la scène trap de Géorgie. Présent sur deux projets de ce début d'année, Live From Da Dawghouse EP et Can You Digg It 2, Weed Bank confirme une fois encore cette synergie avec un Que particulièrement agile et contorsionné pour suivre la 808 du beat « montagne russe » de Sonny. Évoluant malheureusement sous le radar depuis son tube OG Bobby Johnson, Que confirme pourtant, avec ses deux récentes mixtapes, son statut de valeur sûre d'Atlanta.

– Smoke Purpp - Glock Inside My Benz (Prod. by TM88)
Smoke Purpp fait partie de cette jeune génération de rappeur biberonné (voir bousillé) à Chief Keef et Future. La chanson Glock Inside My Benz à peine sortie du four, Lil Water s'aventure sur des terres qu'il n'avait pas encore exploré jusque là. Voix pitchée à outrance, mélodie ensoleillée : nul doute que le spectre de Lil Yatchy est passé par là. Le résultat donne un joyeux morceau hypnotique qui se marie à merveille avec le retour du soleil. On va ré-entendre parler du bonhomme très vite. ESKEDITTT.

– Squidnice - Nina (Prod. by Adrian Lau)
Une fois n'est pas coutume : un New-Yorkais sur SwampDiggers. Avec sa sérénité wizkhalifienne devant les caméras, son flow ininterrompu, ses variations mélodiques, son énergie et ses judicieux choix instrumentaux, Squidnice commence à faire du bruit sur SoundCloud. Sa première mixtape, The Craccen, sortira courant 2017. Le premier extrait du projet, Nina, donne un joli aperçu de ce qu'est capable de faire ce garçon qui a eu l'honneur de donner son premier show au SXSW le mois dernier. A suivre attentivement.

– $uicideboy$ – You're Now Tuning in to 66.6 FM with DJ Rapture (The Hottest Hour of the Evening)
En parallèle avec l'annonce chez XXL de leur tournée européenne, les $uicideboy$ sortent un single au titre à rallonge et plein d'ironie. Un banger charcuté à la mode des DJ d'Atlanta, tout en énormes basses et soigneusement bourré de tags Trap-A-Holics et autres coups de feu en rafale. Un titre et un format qui imite la radio comme pour souligner, "tongue-in-cheek", la rancoeur que nos deux trublions portent envers cette industrie qui semblent toujours les ignorer. Un avant-goût enthousiasmant des cinq prochains épisodes de la saga Kill Yourself, qui devraient tout sortir le même jour, le 26 mai prochain.

– TrakkSounds - Bout It Ft. Maxo Kream & Xavier Wulf
Le producteur de Houston TrakkSounds a réuni Maxo Kream et Xavier Wulf pour le morceau Bout It. Il figurera sur The Other Side, son premier album, qui rassemblera un casting impressionnant, de Scarface à Kevin Gates en passant par Starlito entre autres.
Tels des soldats No Limit, les deux rappeurs débarquent ici en tank pour reprendre à leur sauce un des titres les plus marquants de T.R.U., leur rendant hommage sur une production empruntant les synthés G-funk de l'originale (signée KLC) sur une rythmique plus actuelle et plus musclée. Un véritable street anthem pour tous les G's qui sont à propos de putes et d'homicide.

– YEEK – Away
YEEK est un chanteur originaire de Los Angeles qui possède déjà une certaine reconnaissance dans le microcosme de Soundcloud. Sur Away, YEEK partage avec nous sa mélancolie sur une production minimaliste et envoûtante. Le morceau est construit comme une véritable balade et invite l'auditeur à s'évader. Le single est un extrait du prochain album de YEEK, Sebastian, qui devrait sortir le 28 avril 2017.

Sorti chez Lab Records, la tape Tales From Tha Crip est un mélange efficace de saveurs californiennes, mélangeant sirènes et samples typiquement G Funk sur des rythmes trap/ratchet plus modernes. Le jeune Yung We$t est un dur, il nous explique pourquoi dans ce So Many Envy, chaloupé et sombre en même temps.
